THE LEGACY
You threw me from your arms
like some momentous weight
You made me run
with my hands held high over my head
and embellished my flesh
with iron skinned snakes
You made me afraid
of flying
telling me I'd fall and break and bleed
Your venom filled my
eyes
until I could no longer cry
And after you died
I began to realize
I'm just another man
like you
who learned to tie my own son's shoes
with a ball and chain
borrowed from my father's youth.
